From the Director:

“…and of the ten plagues, the Lord sent one through six, inclusive…”

The above is one of my all-time favorite lines from Woody Allen, and it just about fits the way we’re feeling right now. Let’s see: first we had the flood, then in the midst of the cleanup, asbestos tiles were discovered and had to be removed, then one of our two rooftop AC compressors failed. No sooner had we re-opened and started getting back to normal but the other rooftop compressor blew. I’ve told the staff to be on the look out for locusts!

Quoting the Woody Allen line made me want to go and re-read Without Feathers. I dare you to read this book in the company of other people—waiting at the doctor’s office, standing in line at the supermarket—and not laugh out loud. Reading the great humorists is essential for these times, so I recommend that sometime this summer you find and read one of the following authors: Robert Benchley, S.J. Perelman, James Thurber, Calvin Trillin, or Dave Barry. Times may be tough, but as long as you can see the humor in things you know you’ll be fine.

You’ll be fine if you come to the library, where the Children’s staff will be making a splash with this year’s Summer Reading program. Get into the swim and join us!

Requiescat in pace: Word has just reached us of the passing of Robert Moorehead, who served on the Library Board from 1992 to 1998, and was a lifelong library user. Bob’s political savvy and ardent support of the library were crucial in helping us get funding after the town’s budgetary crisis in 1993. Rest in peace, Bob.
